Engineers in the United States have developed a new battery that can store up to 10 times the capacity of current lithium-ion batteries. The new technology will have a huge impact on current electric cars’ charging time and range.
The battery was developed by nanotechnologists at the University of California, San Diego, USA. He did not invent anything big. What they did was change the material inside the existing lithium batteries into something else.
Lithium-ion batteries are being used extensively in smartphones, laptops and spacecraft. (Yes, the battery in this phone is a lithium-ion battery). Batteries have two male and female stubs. The positive side is the positive side and the negative side is the negative side. Graphite is traditionally used in the room where the lithium-ion batteries come from. Scientists have long known that using silicon instead of this graph is 10 times more energy efficient. But silicon has a problem. This silicon swells when it comes in and loses weight when it comes back out. Therefore, it is dangerous to use this silicon in conventional commercial batteries
There is another problem when using silicon instead of black. This is because the electrolyte used in current lithium batteries reacts with silicon. Due to this reaction, the lifespan of this conductor is shortened. Without electricity, the battery would not work.
To solve this problem, engineers at the University of California are experimenting with replacing electrolytes with solids. The first component of a conventional lithium battery was replaced by silicon instead of graphite. It is then replaced by a sulfur-based solvent instead of the usual electrolyte. The resulting battery has a higher capacity than conventional lithium batteries.
In this test, we found that even after 500 recharges, the battery life was still 80% good. This is more than just a lithium-ion battery.
Engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, have published their invention in the journal Science and Technology.
